The smaller Prius

Living in San Francisco, I have an immediate appreciation for smaller cars. At about 13 feet long, the Prius C is easy to park and maneuver through narrow, crowded streets. And it is a good-looking little hatchback, more points in its favor. With only 99 horsepower, the phrase "hot hatchback" does not quite apply, but average fuel economy greater than 50 mpg is a virtue in itself. During CNET's week with the car, extensive driving barely brought the tank down to half. Add Toyota's new midrange navigation system and Entune app integration, and the 2012 Prius C easily receives an Editors' Choice Award.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco
The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco is a competent highway cruiser with a good baseline of cabin tech, but its eAssist mild-hybrid system doesn't really deliver the miles per gallon.

Love or hate its styling, the 2012 Mini Cooper Coupe John Cooper Works is easily one of the best-performing front-wheel-drive cars we've tested. Unfortunately, it's also priced about $10,000 too high.

The 2012 Mitsubishi i-Miev will fit specific driving situations well, such as a 20-mile suburban commute, but above the base trim level its price comes too close to that of the more capable Nissan Leaf.

2013 Volkswagen CC
The 2013 Volkswagen CC would be an impressive car if it were priced in the mid-20s. At $35,000, its sparse cabin tech does not measure up with the competition.

Comment of the week: keep it in your pocket

While texting and driving is illegal in my state, talking on the cell is legal. I began to become aware of how others drive while talking, and it was scary. I've seen delivery trucks, semis, and heavy duty trucks lose lane control, slow down, and drive erratically (like turning right from a left turn lane).

Then I realized I was probably doing the same thing. So, I keep my cell phone in my pocket while driving now. No text or phone call is so important that it can't wait for the 15 to 20 minutes it takes me to go where I need to go. And if it is that important, I'll exit the road and deal with the situation.
