Ford Focus Electric drive

Automakers are coming out with production electric cars a lot faster than I would have expected five years ago. The Nissan Leaf has been out for a year, Mitsubishi is just starting to make its i-Miev available, and the electric version of the Ford Focus will hit showrooms later this year. CNET's Antuan Goodwin got behind the wheel of the Focus Electric last week, and found the driving behavior was remarkably like that of the gasoline Focus. Except for the silence, that is. Of course, with current electric powertrain technology, the Focus Electric won't go far, but its recharge times are very fast, and it will cost much less per mile than gasoline cars.

Love or hate its styling, the 2012 Mini Cooper Coupe John Cooper Works is easily one of the best-performing front-wheel-drive cars we've tested. Unfortunately, it's also priced about $10,000 too high.

The irony is that the 2012 Jaguar XKR-S' allure as "the fastest, most powerful production Jaguar model ever sold" is less about powerful performance than it is about making a powerful statement.

Comment of the week: To BRZ or not to BRZ?

I think most of the hype falls under Japanese automakers returning to the U.S. market with genuine Rear-wheel-drive sports coupes. Mazda has pulled the RX-8 due to poor sales (and premium price) leaving the 370Z cold and alone.

If I were 10 years younger with no wife and kids, I'd probably look into getting [a Subaru BRZ]. But I'd wait to see if Subaru announces an "STi" version with a turbocharger first.
