Google doubles down on 3D in Earth

This week, Google held a major conference on its mapping technology, introducing a number of new initiatives. Primary among them was a demonstration of its new 3D technology for its Earth application. Unlike 3D at the movies, Google Earth will include enhanced rendering of buildings, letting you move around them in the application. This technology will initially come out for the Android and iOS versions of Google Earth, and I imagine the folks over at Volkswagen's Electronics Research Lab, who integrated Google Earth with Audi navigation, are taking a good, hard look at the new features. Another useful feature announced by Google was an offline mode for its Maps app. This feature will let you download whole city or regional maps to an Android smartphone, very useful when traveling abroad or driving through an area without cell service.

It must be very frustrating for GM engineers to read comments like yours.

I get 360 miles of range. I can get in my Chevy Volt in Michigan and get to Boston in the same day.. exactly the same time as my last car. But since I do not do 800 mile road trips every week, I can also get 100MPG most of the time leveraging the electric battery range for shorter commutes...  Read full quote
