Tesla debuts electric SUV

This week we got a look at Tesla's newest vehicle, the Model X all-electric SUV, at a special preview event in Los Angeles. As expected, the Model X is built on the same platform as the Model S sedan, so there are many similarities. The battery options will be the same, although the Model X will get about 10 percent to 12 percent less range due to greater weight. The Model X has a wheelbase about 4 inches longer than the Model S', and a full third seating row. One innovative feature is what Tesla calls its falcon-wing doors, which give it very large door openings. Don't hold your breath for the Model X, though, as it doesn't go on sale until 2014.

 Comment of the week
...I was the assistant director of a solar car team years ago and I have to say that the technologies and such are very cool however I also have to say that commercialization of solar cars is just not going to happen, likely ever.

Even the best solar cells (space grade) don't produce all that much energy and so require a ton of surface area. The solar array on this car is pretty small relative to other solar cars, so they likely are charging the batteries at night using a outlet or stopping a lot and charging.

If solar was a practical solution you would likely see Semi trucks with solar array's on the large surface area of the trailers.. but it just isn't very practical.  Read full quote
