This week, Google held a major conference about its mapping technology, introducing a number of new initiatives. Primary among them was a demonstration of its new 3D technology for its Earth application. Unlike 3D at the movies, Google Earth will include enhanced rendering of buildings, letting you move around them in the application. This technology will initially come out for the Android and iOS versions of Google Earth, and I imagine the folks over at Volkswagen's Electronics Research Lab, who integrated Google Earth with Audi navigation, are taking a good, hard look at the new features. Another useful feature announced by Google was an offline mode for its Maps app. This feature will let you download whole city or regional maps to an Android smartphone, very useful when traveling abroad or driving through an area without cell service.
