Novell Demonstrates Innovative Solutions and Presents on the Latest Open Source Trends at OSCON 2008

WALTHAM, Mass. -- July 21, 2008 -- Novell today announced its participation in OSCON 2008, July 21-25 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Ore. With sponsorship of projects such as Bandit, Kablink, Mono and openSUSE; contributions to approximately 50 open source projects including GNOME, KDE and the Linux kernel; and active membership in more than 27 open-standards setting organizations, Novell is committed to promoting the growth of open source in all levels of the IT infrastructure. Through demonstrations and presentations, attendees will learn about a few of Novell's most innovative open source solutions and projects.

Demonstrations
In booth 314, the most recent releases from openSUSE and Kablink will be showcased:
- openSUSE 11.0, the latest release of the award-winning community Linux distribution, is a major update over the previous release and includes everything needed to get started with Linux on the desktop and server.
- openSUSE Build Service 1.0, the first major release of the Build Service, provides developers with direct access to the code repositories for the openSUSE Linux distribution as well as easy-to-use tools to contribute changes, thus streamlining the ability for all developers to contribute code.
- Kablink, an open source collaboration platform that unifies team workspaces with real-time conferencing. Kablink includes blogs, wikis, calendars, tasks, document management, live conferencing and instant messaging.

Presentations
- Wednesday, July 23 at 10:45 a.m. in E145, Joseph Hill, Mono product manager at Novell, will present on "Open Source Rich Internet Applications with Silverlight and Moonlight Web Applications." Attendees will learn about the latest open source Web development tool to emerge from the Mono project, Moonlight, which enables the creation and delivery of rich Internet applications through an open source implementation of the Microsoft Silverlight Web browser plugin.

- Wednesday, July 23 at 4:30 p.m. in E142, Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier, openSUSE community manager, will present on "Everything You Wanted to Know About openSUSE." The presentation will cover the openSUSE community, new features in the openSUSE distribution and the openSUSE Build Service.

- Wednesday, July 23 at 5:20 p.m. in D136, Niel Bornstein, data center technology specialist at Novell, will present on "Open Source Virtualization Hacks." Attendees will learn ways to build a management system and about the Open Virtual Machine Format (OVF) and some of the other emerging standards helping to run modern data centers.

- Thursday, July 24 at 10:45 a.m. in Portland 255, Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier, openSUSE community manager, will moderate a panel on "The Evolution of the Community," featuring panelists Ross Turk of SourceForge, Jono Bacon of Canonical, John Mark Walker of CollabNet and Jeremy Hogan of Hyperic. The panelists will discuss how to grow and maintain open source communities.

- Thursday, July 24 at 1:45 p.m. in E141, Brent McConnell, community manager at Kablink and David LaPalomento, developer at Kablink will present "The New Architecture of Collaboration." This session will focus on building collaboration applications that solve business problems using open source products.

- Friday, July 25 at 10:45 a.m. in Portland 255, Nat Friedman, chief technology and strategy officer for Linux at Novell, will present on "The Future of Linux is Software Appliances." This presentation will introduce the benefits of streamlined, customized, single-purpose software appliances based on Linux.
